GSDCV at the Melbourne Pet Expo 2009
The GSDCV attended the Melbourne Pet Expo held at Caulfield Racecourse on Feb 13-15 to promote our German Shepherd Dogs. Thousands of people attend each day of the expo, and its a great opportunity to interact with the dogs, ask questions and view demos and displays.
Once again the GSDCV presented a great stand, covered in pictures of all that we do within the club, demonstrating the versatility of the GSD. We had many of our dogs available for viewing (and patting and cuddles and photos!), and together with our club information pamphlets we made sure everyone who came by the breed stand was well informed about the German Shepherd Dog and responsible pet ownership . All left knowing how wonderful and friendly a GSD can be. Many people took the opportunity to find out how to purchase a puppy through the club, what sort of training was required and other general information about our dogs. On Friday many council rangers from around Victoria also attended under Dogs Victoria's 'Ranger Information Session', and this provided an excellent opportunity to discuss GSD's with them and assist them with info on our dogs, such as checking for a tattoo in a lost dog - we were able to show them first hand.
Dearne Jackson coordinated the GSDCV effort again this year at the expo and Andrew Saliba the arena demonstrations. The GSDCV stand was lucky to not only have a variety of our dogs available for interaction in all shapes, coats and sizes, but also five 9 week old puppies, who of course were the stars of the show!
On behalf of Dogs Victoria Dearne also arranged the Puppies at Play sessions, which were held for 30 mins twice a day in the demo ring. This was always a highlight with the public. There were puppies of all shapes, breeds and sizes, and a fantastic opportunity to show how well they all interact, what is 'normal' puppy behaviour and how important early socialisation can be. It was great to see our GSD puppies mix with all the other breeds - great promotion and great fun !
The GSDCV also provided working demos twice daily on each of the expo days to demonstrate our dogs. On Friday, Andrew Saliba and Wil wowed the crowd with their skills, on Saturday the Malvern branch demo team created some fun with a team of 9 dogs involving baby puppies through to the seasoned adults, and on Sunday the Northern Branch demo team of 7 dogs and handlers also presented a great display. All 3 days of demos presented something different, showcasing all the talents of our wonderful dogs, and how much fun dogs and handlers have together. On both Friday and Saturday the GSDCV were part of Dogs Victoria's 'meet the breed' program, giving an opportunity for us to present our dogs and talk about the German Shepherd Dog breed and its specific qualities.
Congratulations to Dearne on her efforts in making this a successful day for the GSDCV, to Andrew, the Malvern and Northern teams for their public demos, to the Malvern branch members who made their dogs available for the stand and public interaction, and to all those members who came along and who assisted throughout talking to the public and promoting our club and the German Shepherd Dog.
