GSDCV in the Moomba Parade 2013!
On Monday March 11th 2013, 13 members and 11 GSD's represented the GSDCV in the annual MOOMBA parade. Crowd estimates of 100,000+ watched our GSD's stroll down St Kilda Road Melbourne in the Moomba parade as the official honour guard for the Kings & Queens of Moomba (who this year were 7 emergency service workers). As the honour guard, it was fitting and appropriate to have the GSD's following the Emergency Services people, given that our breed performs so well in emergency service roles as well as a companion.
Moomba provided spiffy uniforms for us to look so official. The dogs were the heroes with the crowd and they were cheered all along the parade. View the slideshow of the days activities (from arrival, dressing and parading), view the parade video and read the full details below.
The dogs behaviour was magnificent throughout and they were certainly terrific ambassadors for the GSD breed - the day was filled with publicity and promotion you can't buy !!! At the end of the parade, the dogs had done themselves proud. They lapped up the attention.
The members and dogs involved for the GSDCV were Dearne Jackson (leader), Vince Ebejer with Jipcee, Bernie Lester with Harvey, Gayle Johnston with Al, Dawn Howard with Rain, Grant Milne with Abbi, Ken Mackay with Nero, Ian Woollard with Jake, Jacinta Poole with Dizzy, Michael Simmons with Kato, Chris Mayo with Merlin, Lisa Bateman with Indie and Andrea Cornwall. Lin Milne and Jade Cornwall were our helpers.
To get our group organised, there were 2 days of official parade rehearsals and training nights for our parade routine so we were set to go. After arriving at 7.30am, we walked the dogs up to the start of the parade and took photo opportunities at the Shrine. A big group of GSD's create quite a scene - even at that hour. As we waited there were so many sights and sounds with the area busy with the public arriving for the Moomba festivities. Then we were officially 'dressed' by the wardrobe people and we were ready to roll!
By 10.45am we took our place in the parade line behind the Royal float and emergency service representatives, and waited to set off as the crowd built. Time flew as we walked down St Kilda Rd, meeting and greeting as we marched. By 12.00pm, the parade was over and our dogs mixed with the public, had photos and pats and generally endeared themselves to anyone who took any notice.
Well done and thank you to our magnificent German Shepherd Dogs and their handlers for their efforts. GSDCV Promotions Officer Dearne Jackson coordinated the whole activity and had every base covered in the lead up to ensure that the day went smoothly – a significant task.
