GSDCA CW&A Test

GSDCA CHARACTER AND WORKING ASSESSMENT Test

At the 2016 GSDCA AGM, member clubs approved the introduction of the Character and Working Assessment (C&WA). The objective of the C&WA is to promote and offer guidance for the uniform development of the German Shepherd Dog Breed and to consolidate and improve its character and temperament as part of the breed’s inherent working qualities.

Since that time, the GSDCV has been working towards making the test available to all interested members, with eligible dogs. This is a voluntary test and there is no fee for participation. Eligible dogs will only be accepted if application is made on the prescribed form, which must be submitted to the state C&WA coordinator no less than seven days prior to the advertised date of assessment. A maximum of twenty dogs will be assessed on any given day. If there are more than twenty applicants, a ballot shall take place to determine the participants.

Date: Sunday 9th April 2017 commencing at 11.30am

Change of Venue Champ and Working Dog Club Show

German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria Inc

Dear Exhibitor,

All German Shepherd Exhibitors please note the following advice from the WDC:

“CHANGE OF VENUE FOR GSDCV/WDC  SHOW WEEKEND 29 & 30 OCTOBER, 2016.

Virginia Soderstrom, Secretary of Vic Womens Dog Club has advised that we are unable to hold our shows on 29 and 30 October, 2016 at the Goonawarra Recreation Reserve in Sunbury.  New conditions made the use of the facility untenable. They were also unable to obtain the use of any other local grounds.  The majority of shows at Goonawarra have been moved to the Dogs Vic Bulla site, BUT there was not enough room to fit the German Shepherd Club of Victoria and WDCV shows at Bulla.

Moomba Parade 2016

What a great day for the GSDCV in the 2016 Moomba parade as the King & Queen's courtiers. ~85,000 people lined St. Kilda road for the parade and all loved our dogs. Our 10 fabulous GSD's also loved every minute of it with lots of cheers down the route from the public. The dogs were very popular & perfect breed ambassadors - patient, entertaining and unphased during the excitement of the day. Thanks to all involved and those who made it happen.
Here's all the pics from our big day - there's lots more to it than the parade. Great chance to interact with the public and the dogs love it. Well done to all our team - Merran Hamilton & Kaiser, Gayle Johnston & Al, Jacinta Poole & Dizzy, Lisa Bateman and Indi, Nicki McDermott & Winnie, Chris Mayo & Merlin, Vince Ebejer & Jipcee, Sue Hounslow & Shiloh, Lyn McPherson & Shiraz, Dearne Jackson & Polly and helpers Grant Milne (video), Lin Milne (photographer), Donna Bradley (parade leader) and Mike Fajdiga (banner carrier) !

Structural Assessment

Breed Affairs along with the Northern Branch will be conducting a Structural Assessment on June 25 commencing at approximately 1.00pm. This is an ideal opportunity for members from any Branch to learn more about their dog and the German Shepherd Dog. Except for a minimum age of 18 months, there are no qualifications for entry, simply register your interest and get involved on the day. Forms can be accessed from your Chief Instructor or Breed Liaison Officer.
How does the assessment operate?
An assessment loosely follows a GSDCA Breed Survey. Informally applying the GSD Breed Standard, an anatomical description of your dog will be noted. Reaction to the gun and notations of character, demeanor etc will also be observed with all details later recorded on a certificate for you to keep. Please note that a Breed Assessment is in no way a recommendation for future breeding.
At the end of proceedings there will be a discussion of the day’s events including an overview of the GSD. You can also join an obedience class at 2.00pm and make it a really great social and educational day for you and your dog. Catering will be available. Northern is situated within Bundoora Park, Plenty Road Bundoora. For any further enquiries please call Terry Taukus 0439 003468

ANKC GSD Survey

As a result of the motion carried at the 2015 GSDCA AGM the ANKC have approved that a survey is conducted of all owners of registered German Shepherd Dogs to amend the current Litter Registration Limitations (LRL) relative to screening for hip and elbow dysplasia for German Shepherd Dogs.

The survey will only take a couple of minutes of your time to complete. You will require your membership number and the registered number and date of birth of a German Shepherd registered in your name.

The adoption of these changes is seen as an essential measure for the further improvement in the health of the GSD and evidence that the GSDCA together with the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) take health and welfare issues seriously. So that these changes are implemented please ensure that you take the time to register a ‘yes’ vote by 1st March 2016.

Read all the information on the GSDCA website here, including dowloading a hard copy of the survey

Our day out in the Moomba Parade !

The GSDCV had a very successful day out in the Melbourne Moomba Parade. 80,000 people lined St Kilda Road and cheered as we went along as the escorts for the King (Shane Warne) & Queen (Pallavi Shada) of Moomba. Our 13 GSD's were the stars of course, and all were exemplary GSD promoters. The pats, pics and cuddles from the public at the end for the dogs was terrific. Very popular and a great day of promotion. Thanks to MIchelle & Bella, Merran & Kaiser, Gayle & Al, Andrea & Zoe, Jacinta & Dizzy, Dawn & Rain, Ashley & Asa, Chris & Merlin, Ian & Jake, Barbara & Amber, Michael & Kato, Sue & Shiloh, Lyn & Shiraz, and helpers Dearne, Vince, Grant, Lin, Donna, Karen and Veronica ! Puppy Socialisation Seminar, by Vicki Austin

See attached flyer.

Vicki Austin will present a seminar titled:

OPTIMAL SOCIALISATION DURING THE CRITICAL DEVELOPMENT PHASE (PUPPIES 3-12 WEEKS)

The presentation will target two socialisation timeframes: three to eight weeks while the puppy is still with the breeder; and eight to 12 weeks when the puppy has reached its new home. Vicki will also discuss ongoing socialisation efforts for adolescence and adulthood as socialisation is a critical component in the development of a well rounded, socially aware German Shepherd Dog.

Junior Handling at the National

STOP PRESS: Handling Masterclass at 2015 National!
The Master Class is for youth handlers and will be at KCC Park, Melbourne, on Thursday 7 May 2015 (the Day before the National starts) at 4.00pm. We have the top handlers in Australia and overseas to give you some lessons and tips on how to present your dog in stance and in movement. If you have a dog you show, then bring it along for the class, as it is a very hands on practical session. It is important you RSVP by Thursday 23 April if you are interested in coming, so we have the right number of handlers to provide coaching for you.

Our Tram face - donated for the Good Friday Appeal

Have you seen our 'Tram Face"? as part of the Good Friday Appeal, we've donated to have a tram face, and look at it! Its out and about on tram 2072, operating out of Essendon Depot, travelling on Route 59 (Airport West to City/Elizabeth Street) and Route 57 (West Maribyrnong to City/Elizabeth Street). Great promotion for us, so if you see it give it a wave! Tomorrow we'll be out collecting on corners for the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal - so if you see us, donate some coin !!! Thanks to Vince Ebejer for tracking our tram for a photo !

Donate to our cause ! - beyondblue

The German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia has adopted a policy of reaching out to the community at each National GSD Show and Trial, to show collective support for our community. beyondblue as the recipient of our fundraising efforts for 2014.

"3 million Australians are living with depression or anxiety. beyondblue is working to reduce the impact of depression and anxiety in the community by raising awareness and understanding, empowering people to seek help, and supporting recovery, management and resilience"
Most Australians have had some experience with anxiety, depression or a related disorder, whether they've experienced it themselves or had family, friends or work colleagues go through it. beyondblue’s work is aimed at achieving an Australian community that understands depression and anxiety, empowering all Australians, at any life-stage, to seek help.

The GSDCA and all affiliate clubs are invovled and we urge you to support this cause with some very active fundraising leading up to the National Show & Trial.
This year the target of $5000. Let's try and exceed this if we can.
It is easy to make your donation count.
Please log onto https://give.everydayhero.com/au/gsdca and select GSDCV from the list and make a donation into the supporter account.

Our Good Friday Collection - $22,891.50 for the kids!

GSD Intervariety Breeding Articles

In preparation for the GSDCA AGM and voting on motions:

The GSDCA Executive in an effort to provide as much relevant information as possible has arranged for an article by Frikkie van Kraayenburg on Breeding Long Stock Coat (LSC) and Short Stock Coat (SSC) German Shepherd Dogs to be published in the next edition of the Quarterly National Review.
All members should have the opportunity to read the articles prior to attending Club meetings to discuss and vote on the GSDCA AGM agenda items.
Due to a delay in getting the Quarterly National review to members in early January, a copy of the article is below. Also below is a copy of an article as sent by Dr. Karen Hedberg for members information as a balanced view of:
a) the genetics involved and
b) the consequences of inter breeding the 2 varieties (proposed for a limited time).

GSDCV in the Moomba Parade 2013!

On Monday March 11th 2013, 13 members and 11 GSD's represented the GSDCV in the annual MOOMBA parade. Crowd estimates of 100,000+ watched our GSD's stroll down St Kilda Road Melbourne in the Moomba parade as the official honour guard for the Kings & Queens of Moomba (who this year were 7 emergency service workers). As the honour guard, it was fitting and appropriate to have the GSD's following the Emergency Services people, given that our breed performs so well in emergency service roles as well as a companion.
Moomba provided spiffy uniforms for us to look so official. The dogs were the heroes with the crowd and they were cheered all along the parade. View the slideshow of the days activities (from arrival, dressing and parading), view the parade video and read the full details below.

VALE Monika Gilmour

VALE Monika Gilmour
Members and Friends said farewell to Monika Gilmour yesterday. Monika was a long serving member and instructor for the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria, and a stalwart of the Malvern Branch, who sadly passed away just over a week ago. Monika was a very accomplished obedience dog trainer and helped many people to hone their training skills with a view to competing with their dogs in obedience and tracking trials. She was held in high esteem by everybody who benefited from her knowledge, and this was borne out by the number of people who attended her memorial gathering yesterday afternoon. There were 50 or 60 people who came along to pay their respects, including many respected obedience trial judges who came to know Monika over the years through her own success in the trial rings. Jim Begg gave a very good summary of Monika's history within our Club, and Fran Farley related stories of her personal experiences and friendship with Monika.

Thank you to Greg Bobbin, a close friend of Monika's who organised the afternoon, and to another old friend Margaret Vasil for her huge effort co-ordinating the catering.

Seminar: obligations within the Vic Legislation and Domestic Animals Act

Steve Moore from the DPI will be giving a seminar to Dogs Victoria members at KCC Park at 7.30pm on 24th April 2013 to explain our obligations under the various Codes within the Victorian Legislation and Domestic Animals Act. Details can be found here http://www.dogsvictoria.org.au/Portals/0/assets/members/Seminar.pdf

Submit a comment: Vic Code of Practice for Operation of Breeding and Rearing Establishments

The Victorian Code of Practice for the Operation of Breeding and Rearing Establishments is currently under review. Follow the link here http://www.dpi.vic.gov.au/pets/about-pets/breeding-and-rearing-code-review-public-comment to see the new Draft Code, which is open for public review at the moment. You can provide comment online or by email until the 13th May 2013.

In Victoria dog breeders who own more than three fertile bitches must register with their local Council as a Domestic Animal Business (and comply with the above Code), unless they are a member of an Applicable Organisation. Members of such an organisation (e.g. Dogs Victoria) may have up to nine fertile female animals before they need to register. To obtain this exemption the organisation needs to have its own code of conduct for breeders, and there are certain obligations upon members to comply, in order for the organisation to maintain this status.

Elke & Jochen's Swiss Adventure is Over !

After 3 months of training and learning in Switzerland for Elke Effler and her search and rescue GSD Jochen, the 2 day test arrived on Oct 26/27. After 7 searches - 4 in the afternoon and 3 during the night, at the half way point of the test, vets declared Jochen unfit to continue the test. A dogs welfare always comes first, and they retired from the test. Elke's blog detailing their quest to become fully accredited as an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team can be read here  http://jochensswisschallenge.weebly.com/index.html  Elke details their final test and all that happened. In it, Elke asks herself:

WAS THE JOURNEY WORTH IT?
In answering that question, I need to remind myself and you, the reader, what this project was all about.
1. To train with my dog in Switzerland
2. To gather knowledge that will improve me as a handler, instructor and assessor in canine USAR search and pass this knowledge on to those wishing to learn from this new knowledge.
3. To participate in the toughest canine USAR test
4. To put to a serious test our training in Australia and see if Jochen and I can swim at the top level
4. To showcase Australian German Shepherd Dog breeding
I wonder if the reader thinks that Jochen and I have fulfilled that mission?

Elke is proud of herself and Jochen for all they've achieved - and so are we. The GSDCV congratulates Elke & Jochen on their quest. In true Aussie spirit - you've gotta give things a go !!! No doubt it was worth it!!. We look forward to hearing more on their return to Austraila shortly.

Input to GSDCV's Working Party for National Council

THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA (GSDCA) – WHERE IS IT HEADED?
...Input and ideas are sought from Victorian members.....
At the GSDCA’s AGM in Queensland in February this year, the incoming GSDCA President, Mr Vince Tantaro appealed to all clubs/surveyors/enthusiasts to try to work together and determine where the Council should be heading into the future.

As part of this strategy, it was decided to hold a “Future Directions Workshop” in October 2012 where the Club Presidents and one other nominated person from each club meet in Melbourne and put forward ideas to assist the development of a strategic plan for the future of the Council.

The GSDCV Management Committee has asked a small group of enthusiasts, namely Mr Frank Moody, Mr Dom Cafari, Mr Andrew Jones, Mr Alastair Henderson, Mrs Fiona Henderson, Mrs Dawn Howard, Mr Vince Ebejer , Mr Ian Urie and myself put together some discussions points for the GSDCA Future Directions Workshop and I have been given the task of “chairing” this working party.

Special General Meeting Notice - all members !

IMPORTANT  NOTICE - GSDCV Members are advised

SPECIAL  GENERAL  MEETING

To be held Sunday 9th October 2011 at the
GSDCV Clubrooms, KCC Park, Westernport Highway, Skye
Commencing at the conclusion of Breed Survey at approximately 2.30 pm.

To discuss and vote on the below motion as received by the GSDCA from the German Shepherd Dog Club of South Australia.

Motion:
From January 1st 2012 the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia recognize micro-chipping as a positive form of identification for inclusion into all of the GSDCA Breed Improvement Schemes.

Rationale:
Micro chipping is an internationally recognized identification scheme, and should be accepted as a positive form of identification. It is less a traumatic procedure for the pups to endure, and after all are we not here for the benefit and the protection of the Breed.
Since 2008 the GSDCA has had the opportunity to come up with a process and or procedure to integrate micro chipping into our control schemes. To date nothing has been forthcoming from the working party except for a wait and see approach.

Members and in particular breeders are urged to attend and be part of the decision making process.

Ros Vincent,
Honorary Secretary,

GSDCV's Good Friday Efforts!

GSDCV’s Good Friday Efforts !
Once again the GSDCV joined in the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and and supported the kids in need.
The GSDCV collected $30,019.70 on Good Friday 2011
, which brings our total over 28 years to around $412,377.90. The total money raised this year for the Appeal was $15,156,000.00 – a new record !!!
Members and friends from Western, Eastern, Northern ,Skye and Geelong branches collected on corners throughout the Western Suburbs, having a lot of fun along the way.
After collecting we all gathered at the Flagstaff Gardens for something to eat, then strolled down to Etihad stadium, where members from Western and Eastern put on demonstration with our GSD’s  around 4 o'clock. As usual, the crowd loved the dogs, lots of info was given out and questions answered. Our dogs proved to be very very popular – who can resist a GSD?- and lots of pats and questions were sort after by the public.
Thanks to all the members who participated, and especially those who donated to such an important cause.
Next year we want to go bigger and better again, so consider helping out when the time comes!!

Changes to GSDCA Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme

Re: Changes to the criteria for animals to be awarded the German Shepherd Dog Council
of Australia (GSDCA) ‘Z’ stamp.

At the 2010 GSDCA AGM held February, and after discussion and approval at the 2009 National Breed Commission Meeting, the following motion was subsequently carried:

That as from 1 September 2010 those animals that receive a Grade Two grading through the GSDCA Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme will only receive a GSDCA ‘Z’ stamp if the measurement of arthrosis is less than 3mm.

This motion comes into effect on the 1st September 2010, which means that any animal assessed with 3mm or more of arthrosis on any elbow will be deemed to have failed the GSDCA Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme and therefore will not be able to be presented to the GSDCA National Breed Survey Scheme.

If you have any questions regarding this matter please do not hesitate to contact me on 03 50220393 any evening after 6.00pm.

DPI Survey - Domestic Animal Legislation - members please read !

Department of Primary Industry Survey On Proposed Changes to The Victorian Domestic Animal Legislation

To all Members of GSDCV Inc. **note that this survey has now closed

As you are probably now aware, the Victorian Minister for Primary Industry, Mr. Joe Helper, has initiated an online survey through the DPI website, asking the public for their opinions on some proposed changes to the Victorian Domestic Animal Legislation. The proposed changes generally are intended to increase the penalties for dogs which are currently deemed dangerous, and are found at large or are not registered with their local Council. The proposals however, include rather extreme powers being granted to Council Officers, which would include the ability to seize such a dog and order its immediate euthanasia without further consultation of the dog's owner.

Information about the proposed legislation changes on the Government websites can be seen here:

The annual GSDCV Funday and Open Show have been run and won!!!!

On Saturday November 14th, Northern Branch hosted the annual Funday Challenge, that this year included the GSDCV Open Show.

Despite the warm weather, most branches were represented and loads of dogs had loads of fun !!! Winners in each ring proudly displayed their ribbons and celebrated their success. The fastest recall and the tunnelling events attracted the fastest (and the not so fast!) to test their skills, and a lot of laughs and fun was had by all. The Open Show went off well and was a great opportunity for the club to combine show and obedience, that resulted in a terrific day for the GSDCV Club.

Thanks to all who participated in the day, and congrats to Northern and all who assisted on a great hosting effort !!!!

Following the terrible bushfires on February 7th 2009, all branches and members of the GSDCV fundraised to assist those who had worked so hard to treat the animals and wildlife affected. Several members of the GSDCV were impacted by the fires in the Bendigo, Gippsland and Kinglake areas, and we appreciate the contribution and support of these great organisations and helpers to all involved. Read the full story here of the GSDCV's donations to support those helping the animals.
