Together with my wife Lin we purchased our first German Shepherd in 1993, an ‘Alfie’ son, ‘Delamontain Della ReNoir’ which we named ‘Leijen’. In 2003 when we purchased an Iwan grand son, ‘Blythdale Hawk’ which we named ‘Spirit’, we began to compete in the Conformation ring, and in 2006 began to breed under the MELJENKA prefix. We have just bred our 7th litter.

Since our involvement with the Club l have believed in and followed the GSDCA Breed Improvement Schemes, having the 5 animals I own successfully passing Breed Survey. Since we have been exhibiting, l have attended events both here in Victoria and interstate, achieving many high placings, including two separate National Class winners, Excellent graded in open class including Main Breed and State Breed Exhibitions. In 2010, I became a qualified Show Instructor, paying back to the exhibitor the help and assistance that instructors before gave to me
Over the past 12 years I have held many positions within our organisation starting as a committee member at Northern Branch in 2003, moving onto Assistant Branch Manager in 2005 then Branch Manager in 2006, a position which I retained until 2010. These early years involved at the ‘grass roots ‘ level of our organisation, directly dealing with the members on a weekly basis, resolving issues, ensuring that we operated as part of the Club and upheld our mission to protect the Breed while ensuring that everyone was happy to come to training gave me an invaluable grounding and insight. Coming up through the ranks from Committee member, Assistant Branch Manager, Branch Manager to Vice President in 2010 then President from 2011 to today, I have gained a clear understanding of the challenges that face our breed and our organisation, what is needed to overcome those issues and move forward as well as developing a relationship with members across the Branches. I regularly attend Western Branch where I take show classes, and attend Eastern and Specialist Show Branch. Other involvements are talking and interacting with members, taking part in the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, Moomba Parade, Fundays, Trivia nights and other activities.

My love for the German Shepherd began at a very young age. I vowed that when I started working it would be the first thing I would buy. I bought my first boy Khan when I was 18. We began obedience training and we did very well. Khan lived until he was nearly 15. I then bought a female called Tess who I also did Obedience with. After a long break from having a dog, I purchased a boy called Denargun Whizzer in 2003 from Karen and Blackie. They were my introduction to the GSDCV.Inc. Bear and I joined the Eastern Branch where we did obedience.  I would often go and watch the Show Dogs at KCC Park and I was mesmerised by these dogs and their handlers. I decided my next Shepherd would be a show dog. I purchased Kardin Moon Beam from Richard and Carol Mindin in 2005. Jelly passed away suddenly on Christmas Day 2007. We were offered a female from Sue and Geoff Duke and we added Iturna Voodoo to our Family. Voodoo was my first dog to successfully pass her A & Z Stamps and Breed Survey. We sat our Breeders prefix exam with the VCA in 2008. Our prefix is Verhexen, which means bewitching in German.
I am a current Show Instructor at Eastern Branch and SSB. I’ve been the Branch Secretary of Eastern. Assistant Branch Manager. Breed Affairs Liaison Officer. Breed Affairs Secretary. I attend nearly every Breed Survey, Meeting, Lecture & Show.
I have gotten a lot of joy from this Club and this most beautiful Breed, and it was time for me to give back.

With husband James, purchased our first Shepherd in 1972 and became members of the Club, which at that time was one branch training at the Kooyong Oval. Since that time, I have been involved in breeding under the prefix Rodatt, showing, instructing and club administration.
I was the inaugural secretary of the Ballarat Branch from 1977 to late 1979 when we returned to Melbourne. During the time in Ballarat I obtained my obedience instructors certificate and on returning to Melbourne was involved with Anita Pettenhofer and Joan Bell in writing the puppy training manual for the GSDCV.
I have also held the following positions:

State Breed Survey Registrar 1997 – 1999
Branch Secretary SSB – 2005 – 2008
Branch Manager SSB – 1992 & 2008
I have been involved in helping at shows since 1982, firstly with catering as well as assisting the late Bonnie Gascoigne, then as a stenographer for club shows, National shows, Main Breed Shows and other interstate club shows since 1983.
On a national level, I was National Breed Commission Registrar from 2001 to 2010 and Editor of the Breed Survey Book from 2001 to 2010, including developing and producing the current A4 format of the book.
I have been awarded an Outstanding Service Aware, a Service Medallion from the GSDCA and in 2006 was honoured to be awarded a Life Membership from this club.
My involvement over more than 40 years has seen a great development in our beautiful breed and I passionately believe that we must continue to strive to breed sound, healthy animals that can be taken anywhere and showcased to the public as a dog to be extremely proud of.
